Cleaning of dispensing systems and taps

Regular and thorough cleaning of dispensing systems and taps is crucial for beer quality and hygiene in the dispensing operation. Beer residues, carbon dioxide, and yeast can build up in the lines and not only impair the taste of the beer but also lead to health risks and contamination.

Why is cleaning important?
During the dispensing process, beer and carbon dioxide constantly come into contact with the interior walls of the pipes and the tap. Over time, deposits form that cloud the beer, negatively affect the foam, and can even lead to microbial contamination. Improper cleaning can also lead to unpleasant odors and off-flavors, which impact the entire dispensing business.

How often should cleaning be done?
In restaurants and professional dispensing operations, weekly cleaning of the dispensing system is mandatory. For low-volume dispensing, such as in private households, a cleaning interval of two to four weeks may be sufficient. However, the dispensing tap itself should be thoroughly rinsed with water and cleaned after each use.

The cleaning process:

  1. Preparation: First, the keg is removed and the beer lines are pre-rinsed with water. This dissolves any initial residue.
  2. Cleaning agents: Special cleaning agents for dispensing systems are poured into the lines. These agents dissolve grease, proteins, and yeast while simultaneously disinfecting the lines. The use of warm water enhances the effect.
  3. Flushing: After the exposure time, the system is thoroughly rinsed with clean water until no residue of the cleaning agent remains.
  4. Tap cleaning: The tap is disassembled and placed in a cleaning bath. All individual parts are carefully brushed and cleaned under running water. Particular attention is paid to the seals and threads, as these are often the sites of deposits.
  5. Reassembly: After cleaning, the tap is reassembled and integrated into the dispensing system. Then, it is rinsed again with clean water.

Additional tips:

  • Foam stoppers and check valves should be checked regularly and replaced if necessary.
  • Use food-grade cleaning agents approved for contact with beverage lines.
  • For home use, there are small cleaning sets that are easy to handle and allow for thorough care of the system.
  • For professional systems , it is recommended to regularly commission a specialist company for complete cleaning and maintenance.

A clean dispensing system not only ensures a flawless beer experience, but also extends the lifespan of the system and prevents expensive repairs. Conscientious cleaning ensures satisfied guests and excellent beer enjoyment – with every tap.
