The beer tapping techniques

Tapping beer is an art that requires some techniques and knowledge to serve a perfect beer. Here are some of the most important techniques and tips for tapping beer:

1. Preparation

  1. Temperature : The beer should be chilled at an ideal temperature of about 3-7°C.
  2. Cleanliness : Make sure the tap, glasses and KEG are clean to ensure the best taste and hygiene.

2. The glass

  1. Choice of glass : Choose the right glass for the type of beer. A glass with a narrow opening is good for aromatic beers, while a wide glass is preferred for beers with plenty of foam.
  2. Cleaning : The glass should be free of grease and other residues. A clean glass allows the beer to foam better and keeps the foam more stable.

3. Cone

  1. Correct angle : Hold the glass at a 45-degree angle under the tap. This helps control the foam.
  2. Open the tap : Open the tap completely and quickly. Opening it slowly will result in more foam.
  3. Fill the glass : Allow the beer to fill the glass along the inside. When the glass is about half full, slowly tilt it upright so that the beer flows into the middle of the glass and forms a head of foam.
  4. Foam head : A perfect foam head should be about two fingers wide (approx. 2 cm) high. This protects the beer from oxidation and keeps the aromas in the glass.

4. Fine points of the tenon

  1. Pressure control : Make sure the CO2 pressure is set correctly, usually between 0.8 and 1.2 bar. Too high pressure can cause excessive foaming, while too low pressure will make the beer flat.
  2. Tap position : Avoid immersing the tap in the beer to avoid contamination.

5. Special tapping

  1. Wheat beer : Hold the glass slightly tilted and let the beer flow in slowly to create a high head of foam.
  2. Pils : Pour the beer in two steps. Fill the glass halfway, let it stand for a moment, then fill it up completely.
  3. Stout/Bitter : Pour the beer slowly and then let it rest for a few seconds before adding the rest.

6. Maintenance of the dispensing system

  1. Regular cleaning : Clean the pipes and tap regularly to avoid the build-up of bacteria and to avoid affecting the taste of the beer.
  2. Maintenance : Regularly check the seals and connections of the dispensing system to prevent leaks and pressure loss.

Conclusion

Tapping the perfect beer takes practice and attention to detail. With the right techniques and equipment care, you can ensure that every beer you tap is of the highest quality and offers optimal flavor. Whether you're a professional in a bar or a beer lover at home, these techniques will help you get the most out of every keg.
