Replace spigot washer

If a dispensing tap drips, a hardened, porous or deformed seal is a common cause. However, it is not always that simple: loose connections, dirt in the seal seat or unsuitable pressure conditions can also look similar. For a clean replacement, three points are therefore crucial: depressurize the system, disassemble the tap cleanly and use the old seal as a template for shape, thickness and dimensions. This post mainly concerns the dispensing tap on the dispensing system. You will find the typical differences to the water tap and the single-lever mixer further down in the FAQ. Further causes, tests and remedies are explained in the post Dispensing tap drips: What to do?.

How to recognize the defective seal

The seal ensures that the dispensing tap seals cleanly when closed and that no liquid or air escapes at an unwanted place when dispensing. Signs of wear include dripping from the spout after closing, moisture around moving parts or small leaks at connection points. Upon disassembly, the cause is often immediately apparent: the seal has hardened, cracked, become porous, deformed or no longer sits flush. It is still important to double-check, because not every leak is caused by the seal. Loose threads, damaged metal surfaces or incorrect pressure conditions can also be the actual cause.

How to find the right replacement seal

The replacement seal must fit the design of the existing dispensing tap, because different dispensing taps often require different seals. You can find suitable spare parts here: Seals and O-rings for dispensing taps. Check these points before replacement:

Check point What matters
Model and manufacturer Use the designation of the dispensing tap, documentation or an exploded view as a basis.
Connection and design Standard tap, compensator tap or tap with locking mechanism often require different seals.
Dimensions and shape Exactly match the inner and outer diameter, thickness, profile and seat of the old seal.
Old seal as a template Photos and exact dimensions help to ensure that no ring that only approximately fits is installed.

What to prepare before replacement

With a little preparation, the replacement is faster and the risk of consequential damage is reduced:

  • Stop the beverage supply and depressurize the system. Only shut off the CO₂ or the respective system pressure according to the system's specifications and carefully release the existing residual pressure.
  • Prepare a collection container and soft cloths so that escaping liquid residues can be cleaned up.
  • Use suitable tools: depending on the dispensing tap, approximately a wrench, screwdriver or Allen key. Clamping and loosening aids are also useful. It is better to avoid improvised pliers or unsuitable lever tools.
  • Keep the new seal, the old seal as a template and, if necessary, some food-safe grease close at hand.
  • Keep the work area clean, lay the parts out in order after disassembly and preferably remember the installation position with a photo.
  • Check the threads, sealing surfaces and moving areas directly for deposits, scratches, corrosion or other damage before reassembling.

Replace the dispensing tap seal in 5 steps

This is how you can replace the dispensing tap seal without unnecessarily damaging surfaces or sealing surfaces:

  1. Disassemble the dispensing tap according to its design and remember exactly how the old seal sits.
  2. Carefully remove the old seal without scratching the groove, seat or adjacent metal parts.
  3. Thoroughly clean and dry the seal seat, spout and adjacent components so that no deposits remain.
  4. Insert the new seal exactly correctly and only lubricate sparingly, if this makes sense for the design.
  5. Mount all parts cleanly and without wedging, tighten connections only as tightly as necessary and slowly pressurize the system again. Then check for tightness and smooth operation.

For hygienic post-cleaning after the seal replacement, suitable cleaning equipment for dispensing systems is recommended.

For compensator taps, this guide helps with optimal adjustment: Correctly adjusting the compensator tap.

If the dispensing tap continues to drip afterwards

If the tap continues to drip after replacement, simple assembly errors should first be ruled out: Is the seal sitting flush or is it twisted, crushed or slipped? Are the threads clean and was the union nut or holder tightened evenly? Even a slightly crooked assembly is enough to prevent the tap from closing cleanly.

If the leak persists, the cause is often deeper. A damaged seal seat, corrosion, hairline cracks, stripped threads or play in moving parts cannot be compensated for with a new seal. If the tap also becomes difficult to operate, wobbles or liquid escapes at another place, this points to further defects. Then replacing the entire dispensing tap is often more sensible than several individual repairs one after another.

How the new seal lasts longer

The lifespan of a new seal depends heavily on the cleaning of dispensing systems and dispensing taps as well as on care and regular inspection:

  • Clean dispensing taps regularly with suitable cleaning accessories, especially in areas with air and beverage contact. Residues and deposits attack sealing surfaces and promote new leaks.
  • Check seals during ongoing cleaning for cracks, hardening, crushing and deformation. Wear parts should preferably be replaced early before the tap becomes leaky during operation.
  • Always think of maintenance and hygiene together: disassemble, clean, rinse thoroughly, dry and reassemble cleanly. This improves the function and cleanliness of the dispensing system.
  • Only use suitable tools and suitable aids. Too much grease attracts dirt, unsuitable means can impair the material and sealing effect.
  • For frequently used systems, document model specifications and suitable wear parts so that replacement is possible without long downtime.
  • If it is unclear which dispensing tap, which cleaning product or which accessory for dispensing taps fits, personal advice like the one BieTal offers for dispensing technology and accessories helps.

Frequently asked questions about seals on dispensing and water taps

Leaky dispensing and water taps are often treated the same, although the technology behind them is different. The following short answers help to determine whether a seal, a cartridge, the valve top, cleaning or the pressure situation is the likely cause.

How do I replace the seals on the water tap?

For a classic two-handle water tap, first shut off the water supply at the angle valves or at the main valve. Then open the tap so that residual pressure can escape. It is also useful to close the drain so that no screws or small parts are lost. Then remove the cover on the handle, loosen the screw and take off the handle. Next, the valve top is unscrewed.

Depending on the design, the old seal sits at the bottom of the top or at the corresponding sealing point. Take it out, clean the seat thoroughly and compare the shape, diameter and thickness with the replacement part. Then insert the new seal, remount the top and attach the handle. Finally, slowly open the water again and check if the tap closes tightly and if any drips still form at the spout or on the handle. The basic principle is similar to the dispensing tap, but the components are constructed differently for the water tap. In practice, with ceramic valves, the entire top is often replaced instead of just a single seal.

What can I do if the turn knob of my water tap is leaky?

If the water tap is leaky at the turn knob, the problem is often in the valve top or at a loose connection under the handle and not just at the spout seal. Shut off the water, remove the cap and knob and check the screw, seal, seat and thread. If the area remains damp, the top is often worn out and should be replaced with a suitable one.

How do I replace the seals on the water tap with a single-lever mixer?

For the single-lever mixer, a single classic seal is usually not the actual source of the problem. In many cases, the problem lies in the cartridge, i.e., the component that regulates flow and temperature. If the tap drips, becomes difficult to operate or no longer mixes cleanly, then replacing it with the exactly matching cartridge is often the right way.

First shut off the water supply and briefly open the mixer to release residual pressure. Then loosen the small grub screw on the handle, pull off the lever and remove the cover cap as well as the mounting nut. Then take the cartridge out straight and carefully compare the model, shape and mountings. The new cartridge must fit exactly and be inserted in the same orientation. Guides and noses must sit cleanly, otherwise the water tap will remain leaky despite the new part. Then remount the nut, cover and handle and slowly turn on the water. Finally, check if the single-lever mixer is tight and can be operated evenly. Some fixtures have O-rings in addition, but the cartridge matching the fixture is always crucial.

Why does only foam come out of my dispensing tap?

If only foam comes out of the dispensing tap, it is usually not due to the seal alone. Temperature, pressure, CO₂ setting, pipe length or contamination are more common causes. However, a defective seal can indirectly contribute if air is drawn in or the tap does not close cleanly. Therefore, also check the spout, cleaning and the settings intended for the system and beverage.
