Connecting a dispensing system without CO2

3 Min. Lesezeit

Dispensing without CO2 only works if you use another suitable pressure source instead of an external CO2 cylinder or have a system designed specifically for this purpose. A conventional CO2 dispensing system cannot simply continue to operate without gas, because the keg still requires dispensing pressure. You can find a direct overview of suitable systems here: Dispensing system without CO2 (Sets & Solutions).

Before connecting anything, check three points: the keg and dispensing head type, the beer line standard, and the connection type on the device. This is where most incorrect purchases and installation problems arise. If the first glass foams heavily or nothing flows at all, the cause is often not the keg itself, but rather the temperature, lack of pressure buildup, or unsuitable connectors.

When you can dispense without CO2 at all

You can only dispense without an external CO2 cylinder if an alternative pressure solution is available: for example, manually using a pump, with compressed air for dispensing systems, or with a dispensing system approved for this purpose. The difference, therefore, is not whether pressure is necessary, but how it is generated. Air is usually more suitable for short-term dispensing because the beer does not stay fresh as long after being tapped as it does with a suitable CO2 supply.

Which solution without CO2 suits your setup

Which option makes sense depends on the duration of use, the keg system, and the connection standard. In the shop, the most relevant items for this are ready-to-use dispensing systems, dry coolers, party pumps (picnic pumps), dispensing heads, beer lines, and push-fit connectors. For KeyKeg systems, you need suitable KeyKeg dispensing heads. If you use nitrogen instead of CO2, opt for a nitrogen pressure regulator with adjustable operating pressure.

Solution Suitable for What to look out for
Party pump or picnic pump For short-term use at parties, clubs, or occasional dispensing Air instead of CO2; a suitable dispensing head is essential; unsuitable for long-term storage
Compressed air solution If you want to work without a CO2 cylinder and your setup supports compressed air Check the device specifications, hose dimensions, and connection type beforehand
Compact dispensing system If you are looking for the simplest possible ready-to-use solution Only suitable if the system can be operated without an external CO2 cylinder and the set, keg, beer line, and connection all match

Connecting the keg and dispensing system correctly: the sequence

  1. First, determine the keg type and the suitable dispensing head.
  2. Next, check whether the beer line and device connection really use the same standard.
  3. Prepare the device thoroughly and connect the beer line correctly. With plug-and-play systems, first select the correct adapter or push-fit connector instead of forcing threaded parts together.
  4. Place the dispensing head on the keg and only then activate the alternative pressure source.
  5. Perform a test dispense and check the tightness, seating of the dispensing head, and cooling before actual dispensing.

Most mistakes occur with hoses and connections

Push-fit systems and threaded connections do not automatically fit together. The starting point is always the connection on the device, not the hose that happens to be available. If the existing beer line has a different connection end or dimension, it must be shortened, converted, or completely replaced.

Push-fit connectors are practical if you change kegs frequently or want to reconfigure flexibly. However, they only work with suitable hoses and fittings for dispensing systems. In practice, it is therefore often more sensible to select the dispensing head, hose, and connector individually and correctly rather than having to laboriously adapt unsuitable bundle parts later.

Targeted troubleshooting for foam, pressure, and startup problems

The amount of pressure you need cannot be answered with a single bar value. The deciding factors are the beverage temperature, line, tap, and the method of pressure generation. Even if a compact cooling device cools down quickly, a keg that was started warm or warm lines can still significantly affect the first glasses.

  • First, check the temperature of the keg, line, and tap.
  • Next, check the tightness, seating of the dispensing head, and all connections.
  • Then see whether the hose, connector, and device connection really fit together.
  • Only at the end do you adjust the pressure buildup or device setting according to the dispensing pressure table and manufacturer specifications.
